Patched up religion!

Sometimes people can find it difficult to let some new thing replace an old familiar one. Maybe it is a new friendship, or a change of school or job, or maybe just a change of shoes! The old familiar place or thing can be difficult to give up for the new and different one!

When Jesus' disciples chose to follow Jesus they chose to try something new! They had discovered the "new and living way" to God! 1*. God had been preparing the world for this new "way" down through the centuries by the message of His prophets. 2*. Now, at the right time, God had sent his own Son to be the promised Messiah and Saviour for the world. 3*.

Not everyone wanted to know and accept this "new and living way" to God. The Jewish religious leaders and most of the people were not ready to believe that Jesus was "the way, the truth and the life". 4*. Instead, they wanted to hold on to their old system as being the necessary way to get to God - they would continue to depend on their priests with their sacrifices, and their sacraments, and their various rules.

They said to Jesus, "John's disciples often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but Yours go on eating and drinking." Jesus replied, "Can you make the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them?" 5*.

Now that the long expected Messiah had come those who had chosen to follow and trust Him would not mourn and fast as they had done while waiting for His coming! Things were different now!

Jesus told them, "No one tears a patch from an new garment and sews it on an old one. If he does, he will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old." 6*.

In the same way you and I are not to take the "new" teachings of Jesus Christ and try to patch them into the "old" religious practices that were for the days before Jesus came.

A patched up religion is useless! The many priests and their many sacrifices that were necessary before Jesus came are no longer needed. You see, Jesus, the Son of God, was able to make one single sacrifice for all sin when He offered Himself on the cross for us. 7*.

Jesus used another illustration to emphasise that we must not try to mix the "old" with the "new". He said, "No one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does the new wine will burst the skins, the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined." 8*.

What are YOU going to do about the "new" way to God that He revealed to us when He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to bring people to God. 9*. Are you still going to want to rely on those things that once seemed all important? - sinful priests and their sacrifices that could never take away sins! Or are you willing to put your whole trust on the "new and living way" by depending on Jesus as your only Priest and Saviour. 10*.

Read Jesus' strong warning against trying to patch the two ways together in Luke's gospel chapter 5, verses 33-39.
