Famous ancestors’ example.

Have you any famous ancestors?

Those who have, like to be reminded about them, and to speak of them. We can sometimes learn important lessons from stories about them. Here is an important lesson we learn from “famous ancestors.”

Stephen was on trial before the Jewish Council because of his Christian faith. He was making his defence. He knew the Council was proud of the ancestors of its religion, so he reminded them about their ancestors, the “patriarchs.” “The patriarchs were jealous of Joseph, they sold him as a slave into Egypt. But God was with him and rescued him from all his troubles.” (verses 8-10.)

Of course, the Council knew this history well. They knew now that their ancestors had made a terrible mistake. Joseph had been the one God had raised up to help and rescue them - but they had refused to believe that.

Did this Council not realize that they were making the same kind of mistake? They had refused the One God had raised up to save them - they had rejected and killed the Saviour, Jesus Christ, by nailing Him to a cross! (Acts 5:29-32.)

Stephen went on with the story: Then there was a famine … and Jacob … sent his sons to Egypt for food. (verse 12.) Unknown to his brothers, Joseph was now a governor in Egypt, in charge of the distribution of all food during the famine. They had to go to him, but they did not recognize him! (verse 12. Genesis 42.) That kind Egyptian governor freely provided for them!

Again, hunger brought them on their second visit. It was then they discovered that the generous governor was their hated brother Joseph! “They were terrified at his presence.” (Genesis 45:3f.) What should they do? If they turn away from his help now, they will certainly die with hunger. The only other choice is to ask for his forgiveness and mercy.

YOU don’t have much choice today either. The rejected Saviour whom God gave to the world, is today the Great God in Heaven. (Revelation 5:6-14.) If you turn away from putting your faith in Him alone for your salvation, and try to get forgiveness through someone else, or think religion will keep you safe, you will certainly be LOST FOREVER. (John 3:18, 36.)

“There is salvation in no one else” but Jesus, the Son of God. (Acts 4:12.)

Those “famous ancestors” changed their attitude to Joseph that day, and chose to accept his kindness and protection - they were saved!

Would the famous ancestors" example make the Jewish Council, that was listening to Stephen, change their attitude to JESUS, and to Stephen His messenger?

Right now, you must make your choice - I hope you will accept that Jesus Christ is the only Saviour, and ask Him now for His forgiveness and mercy. (Romans 10:11-17.)
